Transforming Culture

Learning about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and antiracism is not a quick process. Keen to ensure organisations transform business and employees, we analysed best practice and academic research on successful methods to implement inclusion and diversity and designed our flagship programme, Crafting Compassionate Cultures.

“Intent is not impact” A line we regularly share during training. However, that line also applies to Strawberry Words and the learning we offer. No matter how well intended, we asked some crucial questions:

How can we ensure…

  • Employers know how to de-escalate racial issues to avoid litigation?
  • Minorities feel safe at work?
  • Employers know how to create cultures that retains and attracts minority staff?
  • Employees know how to be allies?
  • People feel confident to talk about racism?

When critically assessing our work, we had to think beyond the one-off training sessions and consider how we move organisations to change culture to embed antiracism and DEI practices in everyday practice.

Here's what our beta testers said...

Katherine Hanke - Direct Personal Management

Beta Tested!

Earlier this year, we tested a beta version of CCC with Coventry City Council, Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre, Osborne Clarke Internationale Legal Practice and Staffordshire Youth Offending and Direct Personal Management.

“It's essential training for any public sector organisation. 2. It's accessible and non-preachy. 3. It gives an opportunity to talk about our experiences, ideas and misconceptions. 4. There's always something new to learn.”

Saul Malloy - Staffordshire Youth Offending

"I still have more to learn and I don't think that stops but I enjoy developing my knowledge on these topics and I found the videos very informative and thought provoking."

Laura Vennell PD Manager Osborne Clarke

“CCC definitely stretched and enhanced my knowledge and has given me more thirst for further work. I want to be a better ally, and not being racist isn't enough, you need to be actively anti-racist in my view.”

Lora Humphries - Advisory Teacher for children with visual impairments. Coventry City Council

"I think it would be useful to the organisation as there was some practical gems such as the B.R.A.V.I.N.G model and the policy templates, the reading list and I think it could really help shift things."

Jahnee Wilkins, Learning and Participation Artist Birmingham Hippodrome

“As a result of the first training, the staff training we’ve got a statement that is now on our website. We’ve set up an anti-racism working group and I’m now looking at making some level of anti-racism training or awareness training mandatory for everybody. We have changed our recruiting process, made real efforts on this. Getting people to think properly about what a protected characteristic is and that they’re considering that when they’re short listing. When we do anonymised short listing it is genuinely anonymous and that the staff that are doing the short listing really understand why they’re doing it. We would 100% recommend Strawberry Words. Thank you.” Head of Operations - Anna Wise – Birth Companions
